Hazrat Musa and Khidr (AS): Lessons in Patience & Divine Wisdom

After traveling for many hours, Hazrat Musa (A.S.) and his young companion grew tired and decided to rest near a large rock by the shore. While they were resting, a miraculous event occurred. The fish they had brought with them suddenly slipped from their basket and leaped into the water. It swam away swiftly, leaving behind a strange trail that looked like a tunnel through the sea.

Throughout their journey together, Khidr (A.S.) performed three actions that deeply puzzled Hazrat Musa (A.S.). Each act appeared unfair or even shocking at first glance. Yet, they beautifully revealed the depth of Allah’s infinite knowledge and hidden wisdom that lies beyond human understanding.

1. The Damaged Boat

They boarded a small boat belonging to poor fishermen. Khidr (A.S.) made a hole in it with his own hands. Musa (A.S.) exclaimed in shock: “Have you damaged it to drown its people? You have done a grave thing!” (Surah Al-Kahf 18:71) Khidr (A.S.) gently reminded him of his promise not to question. Musa (A.S.) apologized and remained silent, though his heart was heavy.

2. The Boy Who Lost His Life

Later, they met a young boy. Khidr (A.S.) took his life. Musa (A.S.) was deeply troubled and said: “Have you killed an innocent soul without right? You have done a terrible thing!” (Surah Al-Kahf 18:74) Once again, Khidr (A.S.) reminded him of the condition of patience. Musa (A.S.) sought forgiveness and continued the journey.

3. The Wall in the Unwelcoming Town

1. Finally, they arrived at a town whose people refused them hospitality. Despite this, Khidr (A.S.) repaired a collapsing wall for free. Musa (A.S.) asked: “If you wished, you could have taken payment for it.” At this third question, Khidr (A.S.) declared: “This is the parting between me and you. I will now inform you of the interpretation of that which you could not bear with patience.” (Surah Al-Kahf 18:78)

He then explained the hidden wisdom behind each action, showing that everything was done according to Allah’s command and mercy.

This faith-testing journey taught Hazrat Musa (A.S.) — and all believers — that apparent hardships often conceal great blessings and divine wisdom.

🌊 The Boat

Khidr (A.S.) explained: “As for the ship, it belonged to some poor people who worked at sea. I wished to damage it because behind them was a king who seized every good ship by force.” (Surah Al-Kahf 18:79) By making a small hole, he saved the poor fishermen’s only source of livelihood.

👦 The Boy 

Regarding the boy he killed, Khidr (A.S.) said: “As for the boy, his parents were believers, and we feared he would overburden them with rebellion and disbelief. So we wanted their Lord to replace him with a purer son, more merciful and closer to them.” (Surah Al-Kahf 18:80-81) The innocent-looking child would have grown into a source of great sorrow and corruption for his righteous parents.

About repairing the wall, he explained: “As for the wall, it belonged to two orphan boys in the city. Beneath it was a treasure belonging to them. Their father was a righteous man. So your Lord willed that they reach maturity and extract their treasure as a mercy from your Lord.” (Surah Al-Kahf 18:82) If the wall had collapsed, greedy people would have stolen the treasure.

Khidr (A.S.) then reminded Hazrat Musa (A.S.): “I did not do it of my own accord. That is the interpretation of that about which you could not have patience.” (Surah Al-Kahf 18:82)

Musa (A.S.) accepted this with deep humility, realizing that even prophets learn from the hidden knowledge and divine wisdom Allah grants to whom He wills. This faith-testing journey beautifully teaches patience, trust in Allah’s plan, and the limits of human understanding.
