Part 2 — Earth as a Living Body

3. Oceans and Seas — The Blood and Circulatory System 🌊
Covering 71 % of the surface, the oceans are Earth’s blood — and every creature’s — bloodstream.
Composition parallels:🌊
🐠 Human blood is ~83 % water and salty; seawater is ~96 % water and salty.
🩸 Blood plasma carries nutrients, oxygen, hormones; ocean water carries dissolved oxygen, nutrients, and heat.
⚔️ White blood cells fight infection; phytoplankton and marine microbes regulate ocean chemistry and fight harmful algal blooms.
The great ocean conveyor belt (thermohaline circulation) is the planetary heartbeat: 💓
🔥 Warm surface currents (like arteries) carry heat from the equator to the poles.
❄️ Cold, deep currents (like veins) return to the tropics, completing a cycle that takes 1,000 years.

Plankton — the “red and white blood cells” — produce at least 50–80 % of Earth’s oxygen and absorb massive amounts of CO₂.
When we overfish, pollute with plastics,
or warm the oceans,
we give Earth anaemia, immune deficiency,
and circulatory collapse.
🪸 Coral bleaching is the equivalent of organ failure.🪸
4. Rivers and Lakes — Veins, Arteries, and Lymphatic System
Every river is a living artery carrying fresh water — the elixir of life — from mountain “bones” to ocean “heart.”
The Amazon River alone discharges 20 % of all freshwater entering the oceans — a planetary aorta.
Wetlands and floodplains act like lymph nodes, filtering toxins and excess nutrients.
Seasonal flooding is the pulse that spreads fertility across floodplains, just as blood delivers nutrients to tissues.

🌍⚠️🦠👇
Dams are tourniquets.
When we dam every river, we cut off circulation.
Sediments no longer reach deltas (Earth’s “fingertips”),
causing Bangladesh, Vietnam, and Egypt to lose land to the sea.
Dead zones in the Gulf of Mexico and Baltic Sea
are the planetary equivalent of gangrene.
